A STREET YOU'LL NEVER KNOW

you've been standing there too long
looking up at the window
you gotta move
hiding in the doorway
while the rain is falling
what're you trying to prove

when you're wandering alone
and looking for the street of dreams
it's so easy, you take a wrong
you're lost, you can't move
that's the way it seems

up there in the window
is a face you knew long ago
just a blur in the rain
on the window pane
on a street you'll never know

something cold and sharp
in the air is hovering
you drink it in
and it settles in your heart
like a pain that's nowhere
so where do you begin

sheets of frozen light
are reflected on the black, wet streets
and even though the rain
soaks your hair and pricks your skin
you can't move your feet

you've been wandering so long
and you don't know which way you should go
just a blur in your brain
like a passing train
down a street you'll never know

there's a shadow on your face
and your eyes are like halos
you're sinking in
and your hands feel so frail
and the light so bitter
from where you've never been

the face in the window
peering through the dim, wet cold
and you think something's died
in this place you hide
on a street you'll never know
